Vibration measurement is a crucial method for assessing the operational status of mechanical systems, particularly vital for monitoring bearing performance. To understand vibration measurement, three fundamental parameters must be grasped: displacement, velocity, and acceleration.

                      


Vibration is the reciprocating motion of an object around its initial position. Displacement represents the distance by which the vibrating object deviates from the starting point; frequency (measured in hertz Hz) is the number of vibration cycles completed per unit time. Multiplying displacement by frequency yields the vibration velocity, which reflects the intensity of bearing movement. Generally, the higher the vibration velocity, the greater the bearing noise. This parameter can be measured using common equipment such as vibration testers or Andrew instruments.

However, vibration velocity cannot fully reflect the stress conditions of the system. For frequencies above 2000 Hz, vibration acceleration becomes a more critical indicator, as it reveals the potentially destructive force values in high-frequency vibrations and helps assess the actual dynamic load borne by the bearings.

Why is vibration measurement important?

Bearings are not flawless; even after precision machining, there are minor irregularities on the surfaces of their rolling elements and raceways. These irregularities cause vibrations during operation, which, if not properly controlled, can accelerate wear, increase noise, and lead to premature equipment failure.

To achieve a low vibration level, attention should be paid to the following factors:

1. Improve the surface finish of the raceway and ball bearings;

2. Select an appropriate cage structure;

3. Use low-noise, fine-filtered grease;

4. Continuously monitor the vibration status of the equipment.

How to conduct vibration monitoring?

When evaluating the "quietness" of bearing operation, piezoelectric sensors or accelerometers are typically installed on the outer ring of the bearing to monitor vibration levels in real time. Depending on the monitoring objectives, other types of sensors may also be selected for more precise data collection.

Precise vibration measurement and analysis can effectively extend bearing life, prevent failures, and enhance the overall operational reliability of equipment.
