Faced with thousands of bearings of complex specifications, engineers can pinpoint all the core information of a complex part with just a short string of characters (such as "6205" or "22208"). This string of characters can be considered the "Esperanto" of bearings. However, this now universally accepted industrial language did not come about overnight; its evolution is essentially a condensed history of the development of China's bearing industry.
Rewinding to the 1950s, my country's early bearing designations completely adopted the Soviet "seven-digit system." In that specific historical period, this purely numerical coding method served its purpose. However, with the development of the times, its fatal flaw gradually became apparent—extremely poor universality. On the international trade stage, it was like an "isolated dialect," not only severely hindering the export of Chinese bearing products but also leading to foreign companies repeatedly driving down the prices of domestically produced bearings in the international market. The lack of interoperability in bearing designations became a major obstacle to the industry's economic efficiency and internationalization.

To break this deadlock, the Chinese bearing industry underwent painful transformations in the 1990s. To fully align with the international market, my country resolutely revised its rolling bearing designation standard (GB/T 272-1993) in 1993, completely abandoning the old Soviet-style system and adopting the mainstream international designation system represented by SKF (Sweden), FAG (Germany), and NSK (Japan). During the transition period, many factories experienced the difficult situation of having "two sets of designations per factory" and operating production and management simultaneously. However, it was precisely this determination to align with international giants that truly gave Chinese bearings the "passport" to participate in global competition.
So, how should this internationally accepted "new language" be interpreted? Its core logic is actually very clear: Basic Designation = Type Designation + Size Series Designation + Inner Diameter Designation. Mastering this formula allows you to easily unlock over 90% of bearing size information. Take the common designation "6204" as an example: "6" indicates it belongs to the deep groove ball bearing family; "2" represents the light series, meaning its outer diameter and width are moderate; "04" is the inner diameter designation, which can be easily calculated (04 multiplied by 5) to determine that its inner diameter is 20 mm. This system is intuitive and logically rigorous, greatly improving selection efficiency.
Beyond the basic dimensions, the suffix of the bearing designation hides richer "high-tech" information, representing the bearing's customized attributes. Through the combination of letters and numbers, the suffix accurately conveys the bearing's internal structure, tolerance grade, clearance size, and special requirements such as sealing and dustproofing. For example, when we see "6204-2RS/P6," we not only know that it is a deep groove ball bearing with an inner diameter of 20 mm, but we can also immediately identify that it has contact seals on both sides (-2RS) and achieves a high P6 level precision tolerance. A complete picture of a "customized" bearing emerges.
